The Tate Gallery is pleased to present “Driven to Abstraction”, paintings by Molly Moldovan. May 11-26, Thursday to Sunday, 10am-5pm. Opening reception: Saturday, May 11, 1-4 pm.
Now living in Peterborough County, Molly was born and raised in Montreal where she attended the Ecole des Beaux Arts as a young child. She went on the graduate from Ontario College of Art and Design in 1991 with honours in fine art, specializing in drawing and painting. Her multi layered works are colourful, luminous and fluidly transparent, expressing as idea of landscape that is mediated by memory and emotion. To view her work, go to www.mollymoldovan.com.

Coming next at The Tate Gallery is “light space time”, featuring the work of Brian Smith, a teacher at OCAD and Haliburton School of the Arts, with many solo and group shows under his belt. His figurative paintings are highly influenced by his 40 year love affair with drawing and his interest in the human form, its place in the environment and the light which surrounds it. June 1-16, Thursday to Sunday, 10 am-4 pm. Opening reception: Saturday, June 1, 1-4 pm. www.drawn2life.com.

Troisieme Étage

On a recent trip to Paris, I observed pedestrians crossing the street four floors below from the balcony of my apartment (which, incidentally, was a five minute walk from the Eiffel Tower - so fabulous). Having been interested in the perspective of something seen from above for a couple of years, I was immediately taken by the sight of the elegant Parisians (and their dogs) passing by below. Not only that, but the pedestrian crossings, marked as they were by stripes on the pavement, made for a striking graphic background. This was the source of the inspiration for these paintings. There also happened to be a patisserie on the ground floor which sent a heavenly fragrance up to where I stood at my observation post; I get a craving for French baguettes every time I look at these paintings!

Shifting Ground

The title of this series, "Shifting Ground", refers to the often uncomfortable notion that we rarely feel as though we are standing on solid ground despite our desperate attempts to do so. For some reason, we believe that our lives ought to feel solid and secure but the reality is really quite different; the ground beneath our feet is in a constant state of flux. Sometimes this shifting of sand beneath our feet is relatively easy to adjust to and other times the uncertainty can be overwhelming. It is how we acknowledge this nebulous reality and what we do with it that is the source of the explorations in this series.

Explorations of both the inner world of individuals and those in unfamiliar environments hold a fascination for me.

Dancers

In my younger days, I was a dancer in Toronto, so these paintings are my way of revisiting an important part of my past.

Here are some selections from the many commissioned paintings of homes and businesses that I have created.

Miscellany

I get inspiration from a wide variety of unrelated sources. I never quite know when these flashes of inspiration will strike me but I do know that I have to pay attention and get the ideas down on canvas. The results are these wildly disconnected images which can only be appropriately placed in a "miscelaneous" portfolio.
